School Williamsburg County contains some of the most beautiful and historic buildings in South Carolina. Browntown, located on the border of Florence and Williamsburg Counties lets visitors take a look at the early pioneering lifestyle of the South. A handmade cotton gin is on the premises. In Williamsburg County the "history echoes in the fine architecture and new memories are waiting to happen." Marlboro County was once one of South Carolina's wealthiest counties. Those days have been preserved in Bennettsville's Victorian and Greek Revival homes. The Jennings Brown House, built in 1827 is a beautiful example of this architecture. Lake Wallace is a 500-acre man-made lake offering the perfect place for a day of recreation including fishing, swimming, skiing, and sailing. ![]() Florence County is the central economic, cultural, and recreational hub of the Pee Dee Region in South Carolina. The Florence Museum of Art, Science, and History enlightens visitors on the history of Florence, which began as a railroad town. The 1917 Vulcan Steam Locomotive is on the grounds. Not far from the museum is Timrod Park, a tribute to Henry Timrod, the Poet Laureate of the Confederacy. Built in the 1850's, the Columns, a Greek Revival Style Southern Plantation, is available for tours. Freedom Florence, the area's premier recreation complex, is a very unique sports facility. The complex holds a variety of softball tournaments as well as youth leagues for football. It features five-lighted championship softball fields, jogging, walking, and biking trails, picnic areas, a lake, and a 10,000 square foot gymnastic facility. Center The Florence City-County Civic Center offers live entertainment and cultural events year round. If you like to be onstage instead of watching, the Florence Little Theatre, Florence Ballet Company, Civic Ballet, MasterWorks Choir, Francis Marion University Theatre, Busha Foundation, and Florence Symphony Orchestra offer many special productions. Florence has a variety of restaurants and eateries to choose from. Young's Pecan is the sweet treat stop for a taste of the South. The Pee Dee State Farmer's Market offers local fresh fruit, vegetables, and plants. The Farmer's Market is one of only three open-air markets in the state. University Lee County is home to the Lee County Cotton Festival and the South Carolina Cotton Museum. This county is a place where "the new South coexists with the old"..
